Family: Cistaceae Genus: Tuberaria
Species: Tuberaria guttata (L.) Fourr
Common Name(s): spotted rock-rose, European frostweed, annual rock-rose
.
Tuberaria guttata, commonly known as spotted rock-rose, is native to the Mediterranean region, including countries like Spain, France, Italy, and Portugal, and is now found in many regions of the world. The plant produces beautiful yellow flowers that are marked with red or maroon spots. The flowers are cup-shaped and have five petals that are slightly crumpled, giving them a delicate and intricate appearance.
Traditional Medicine and Modern Science
Several compounds of spotted rock-rose have been found to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The plant has been used to clean and protect wounds, support tissue repair, and alleviate symptoms of respiratory conditions such as coughs, colds, and bronchitis. It’s also been used to aid digestion, alleviate gastrointestinal discomfort, reduce inflammation and soothe skin irritations including those caused by insect bites or stings, and to flush out toxins from the urinary tract.115
Gastronomy
Although spotted rock-rose is not known for its culinary uses, its fields are often explored by truffle hunters in Spain, as it is believed that ‘Criaderas de Tierra’ truffles (Terfezia arenaria) are commonly found there. These truffles are considered a delicacy in some parts of the world, particularly in Spain. They are typically consumed cooked, often sliced and added to omelets, stews, or other savory dishes.
Horticulture, Ornamental, and Other Colorful Uses
Spotted rock-rose is often used in ornamental gardens, particularly in rock gardens and dry areas, where its delicate flowers and slender stems can add a touch of beauty and interest.
Ecology
Spotted rock-rose is well-adapted to dry conditions and is often found growing in rocky areas, sandy soils, and scrublands. In fact, the name “rock-rose” comes from the fact that the plant is often found growing in rocky areas. It plays an important role in soil conservation, helping to stabilize soil and prevent erosion. It is also an important source of food and habitat for insects, particularly bees, which are attracted to its nectar and pollen. Spotted rock-rose is threatened by habitat loss and degradation, particularly due to urbanization, agriculture, and tourism. In some regions, it is threatened by over-harvesting for medicinal and ornamental purposes. Conservation efforts aim to protect this ecologically important species.116
