Hydrangea macrophylla, commonly known as French hydrangea, is a beautiful flowering plant native to East Asia. It was and still is cultivated in many classical Chinese gardens built during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Today, it is widely cultivated in many parts of the world.304
Fables, Folklore, and Mythology
French hydrangeas are often associated with love, gratitude, and perseverance, making them a popular choice for gifts and special occasions.305
Traditional Medicine and Modern Science
French hydrangeas are believed to have anti-allergic and antimicrobial properties. The plant also has “hepatoprotective activity” meaning it can help mitigate liver damage and support its regeneration and repair processes. Leaf extracts are being investigated as possible sources for antimalarial and anti-diabetic drugs.306
Horticulture, Ornamental, and Other Colorful Uses
French hydrangeas are favored for their lengthy stems and strikingly large blooms, which come in a range of colors from pink and purple to blue and white. These qualities contribute to their popularity in gardens and floral arrangements. One of the most interesting things about the French hydrangea is that the color of its blooms can be influenced by the pH of the soil in which it is planted. In acidic soil, the flowers will be blue, while in alkaline soil, they will be pink.307
Interestingly, the French hydrangea is included in the Tasmanian Fire Service’s list of low flammability plants, indicating that it is suitable for growing within a building protection zone.308
