Sorbus aucuparia, commonly known as mountain ash, is a deciduous tree that is native to Europe and Asia. It is known for its vibrant red and orange autumn foliage, clusters of white flowers that bloom in the spring, and small red or orange berries that appear in the late summer and early fall. Mountain ash is a hardy tree that can tolerate a wide range of soil types and climates and reach heights of up to 25 meters.
Fables, Folklore, and Mythology
In many cultures, the mountain ash tree is considered to have mystical properties and is often associated with protection and good luck. It was believed to ward off evil spirits and protect against lightning strikes. In Norse mythology, the mountain ash was considered to be the “world tree” and was believed to hold the nine realms of the universe.147
Horticulture, Ornamental, and Other Colorful Uses
The fast-growing mountain ash is commonly used for hedgerows and windbreaks, and often used for land restoration and reforestation. The wood from mountain ash is hard and strong, and has been used for furniture, tool handles, and musical instruments. The bark and berries have also been used for medicinal purposes, and the leaves have been used to make a yellow dye. It is also a popular bonsai subject, as its small leaves and delicate branches make it well-suited for miniature landscapes.148
Ecology
The berries of the mountain ash are a favorite food source for birds and other wildlife. Although edible to humans, the berries are not as commonly consumed as other berries like blueberries or raspberries.149
The tree’s flowers provide nectar for pollinators like bees and butterflies. Its broad, round crown and dense foliage provide shade in the summer, and its dense branches provide shelter and protection for wildlife. Mountain ash fields are a favored destination for Spanish goat herders, whose sheep enjoy the leaves and fruit.150
